Going from Wedding Coordinator to Wedding Designer: What Are The Challenges and "Creative Disconnect" When Expanding Into Event & Floral Design.

Updated: 7 days ago

Are you a Wedding & Event Planner or Coordinator who offers or wants to offer Design, Flowers, and Decor Setup as part of your event services? What's stopping your growth?

As a planner, you know how to juggle timelines, coordinate vendors, and navigate the unpredictable nature of events. But when it comes to offering event design and florals, even the most experienced planners and coordinators can feel hesitant. The idea of expanding your services might feel overwhelming — especially when concepts like design principles, floral care, and the creative process aren't part of your current skill set.

I’ve been there myself. My journey from a professional artist to a certified floral designer and planner wasn’t always easy. In fact, it all started with my own wedding day in the early 2000s — a day that taught me some hard but invaluable lessons.

A Wedding Day Story: When Art and Planning Collide

Like many brides, I poured my heart into planning every detail of my wedding. But no amount of planning could prepare me for the emotional whirlwind that came when a hurricane devastated the state of Virginia just days before my wedding. Roads were blocked, power outages spread, and my dream day felt on the verge of collapse.

Yet, through all the chaos, I saw something profound: weddings are not “just another party.” Unlike a corporate holiday event or a casual company picnic, weddings are deeply personal and emotionally charged. They are experiences, woven together with memories and meaning.

And despite following all the wedding planning tips, techniques, and standards, I realized there was something missing. Something I’ve seen throughout my years of art and design work — a true understanding of how to translate a vision into a seamless, artful reality.

That realization changed everything.

The Design Disconnect

After that experience, I became determined to help other brides avoid what I went through. But as I immersed myself in the event industry, I noticed a disconnect. Unlike other creative fields — from fashion and interior design to architecture and fine arts — wedding and event planning often overlooked the essential principles of art and design.

Event planners and coordinators frequently dive into floral design, decor, and aesthetics without a clear understanding of:

  • The Design Process:

A structured approach that moves from concept to execution.

  • Floral Care and Processing:

  • Proper handling and treatment that ensures blooms last throughout an event.

  • Design Principles and Art Elements:

Balance, proportion, color theory, and visual storytelling that bring a vision to life.

Without these foundational skills, planners who expand into design often face challenges like:

  • Inconsistent Results:

Struggling to translate a client’s vision into a cohesive, polished event.

  • Time and Budget Overruns:

Mismanaged design timelines, last-minute adjustments, and costly mistakes.

  • Client Dissatisfaction:

A disconnect between expectations and the final design execution.

  • Burnout and Frustration:

Feeling creatively drained and overwhelmed by the design process.

The Cost of Skipping the Art of Design

When planners step into the world of event design without a clear understanding of these principles, it can have lasting consequences. Misaligned expectations, stressful event days, and unsatisfied clients can lead to negative reviews and a damaged reputation. Worse, it can chip away at the joy you once found in your work.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

My Journey from Planner to Designer

Through years of experience, I embraced the same creative principles I used as a professional artist and applied them to event design. From creating concept sketches and floral mockups to understanding the emotional narrative behind every event, I built a process that combines both artistry and strategy. That process became the foundation of Vivid Expressions LLC.

And now, I’m passionate about helping other planners, coordinators, and aspiring designers do the same.
