Avoiding The Most Common Wedding & Event Design Mistakes

Planning a wedding or special event can be a magical experience, but it can also come with its fair share of challenges. One of the most important aspects of any event is the design. A beautifully designed event can leave a lasting impression on your guests, but even the smallest mistakes can have a big impact on the overall experience. At Vivid Expressions, we’ve seen and corrected many common design errors. Today, we’re sharing the top mistakes to avoid, so your next event can be as flawless as your vision.

Tablescape Mistakes - crowded place settings

1st Mistake: Crowded Place Settings

At first glance, these tables look nice, but there’s not enough room, and guests will struggle to sit comfortably and eat or drink without worrying about spills and bumping into each other. When setting your tables, make sure to leave ample space for each guest to feel at ease. Remember, comfort is just as important as aesthetics.

Tablescape Mistakes - Wrong scale

2nd Mistake: Wrong Scale

Avoid "The Plop". Just plopping a centerpiece on the table that's the wrong scale for the surface area can make the table (and overall room) feel like there's something missing or the table is unfinished. The right scale creates harmony and balance, making your design feel intentional and complete.

3rd Mistake: Line of Sight

Another issue we address in our event and floral design classes is how the wrong centerpiece height can impede a guest's "line of sight". This prevents guests from clearly seeing across a table, dance floor, or even the entire room. Ensure your centerpieces enhance, rather than obstruct, the view and interaction among guests.

4th Mistake: Visible Mechanics

Ok, it's not secret that I'm NOT a fan of "fake flowers" but to me there's one thing that's worse than that. You see, one of the best signs of a skilled professional is full coverage of floral mechanics. Guests should NEVER be able to see exposed foam, wire, pipes, cages, or other mechanics of a centerpiece, arch, stage, backdrop, aisle, hanging, or any floral design. Attention to these details can elevate the perceived quality and sophistication of your event.

Avoiding these common design mistakes can make a significant difference in the success of your event. At Vivid Expressions, we are passionate about helping you create beautiful, memorable experiences. Whether through our event design services or educational workshops, we’re here to support your journey to perfection.

Remember, a little attention to detail goes a long way in creating a seamless and stunning event that you and your guests will cherish forever. Happy planning!
